Digital Dystopias

Abstract: This paper examines the paradoxical nature of digital inclusivity as portrayed in two contemporary dystopian novels: Dave Eggers' The Circle (2013) and Ernest Cline's Ready Player One (2011). While digital technology promises greater connectivity and accessibility across traditional boundaries of geography, class, and identity, these narratives reveal how digital platforms simultaneously create new forms of exclusion. Through comparative analysis, this research investigates how both novels navigate questions of language, cultural identity, and social hierarchies within digital spaces. The Circle presents a corporatized digital utopia that ultimately erodes privacy and autonomy in the name of transparency, while Ready Player One depicts a virtual escape from a deteriorating physical world that both challenges and reinforces existing socioeconomic divides. By exploring these digital dystopias through Foucauldian perspectives on power and surveillance alongside contemporary digital media theory, this paper contributes to ongoing discussions about technology's role in fostering genuine inclusivity versus creating illusions of connection that mask deeper forms of marginalization and control.
