Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study looks into the relationship between self-esteem, body image, and achievement motivationwith a sample of 180 individuals. Data were gathered using methods to measure self-esteem and body imagein relation to achievement motivation and were analysed with standardized tools such as Rosenberg self -esteem, Body self- image questionnaire, Achievement motivation. Descriptive statistics show thatparticipants self-reported their level of self-esteem (M = 15.21, SD = 3.374) and body image (M = 73.54,SD = 18.676) as well as their level of achievement motivation (M = 12.81, SD = 2.173). There is a strongpositive correlation between self-esteem and body image as self-esteem increases, self-reported body imagealso increases (r = .534, p < .001). Self-reported body image also has a weak but significant positivecorrelation with achievement motivation (r = .159, p = .033), which points towards the motivation-increasingeffects of having a positive perception of one’s body. Self-esteem does not have a significant directcorrelation with achievement motivation (r = .120, p = .107), meaning self-esteem alone does not stronglypredict motivation. Body image was found to have an effect on motivation, and this signals that there is aneed for programs aimed at adjusting people’s perception of their body and the social contexts whichenhance motivation.
