Universal Phonosemantic Structure of Denial and Prohibition
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study presents a novel phonosemantic theory suggesting that denial and prohibition morphemes across human languages tend to follow a universal acoustic pattern: an open vowel followed by a closing consonant. This sound pattern is interpreted as a symbolic enactment of physical motion—opening followed by closure—mirroring the human gesture of rejection or refusal. The theory is supported by examples from Japanese, Korean, Manchu, Chinese, and Indo-European languages, and proposes that the common structure of “open vowel + closure consonant” reflects embodied cognitive universals in human linguistic behavior.
