Agroecological Analysis of Phytonematodes in Cucurbits Under Climate Stress in Southern and Northern Karakalpakstan

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The ongoing climate change and the environmental degradation caused by the desiccation of the Aral Sea have significantly altered the agroecological conditions of Karakalpakstan, particularly affecting crop productivity and plant health. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of phytonematode infestation in cucurbit crops such as watermelon, melon, and squash cultivated across six districts in southern (Turtkul, Amudarya, Ellikqala) and northern (Chimboy, Beruniy, Khojayli) Karakalpakstan. The aim is to evaluate the relationship between climate-induced stressors (e.g., high soil salinity, extreme temperatures, low precipitation) and the spatial distribution and intensity of phytonematode species. The research is based on the analysis of more than 65 scientific sources published between 2013 and 2023, supported by regional climate and agricultural statistics. Key nematode genera identified include Meloidogyne, Heterodera, and Pratylenchus, with infestation levels ranging from 20% to over 60% depending on crop type and soil condition. Findings indicate that areas with higher salinity and reduced irrigation efficiency experience increased nematode population density and crop damage. The study concludes with practical recommendations for improving crop resistance, optimizing irrigation practices, and implementing integrated pest management strategies. The results highlight the urgent need for climate-adaptive agricultural planning in Karakalpakstan’s vulnerable ecosystems to ensure food security and sustainable land use.
