Realising Food Democracy by Tackling "fear of the Masses" in Public Debates
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Summary: The unsuccessful end of the European Union’s Farm to Fork policy is another example of what seems to be an insurmountable gap between the development of ‘good’ strategies and their implementation. This gap necessitates a search for alternative forms of food system governance. Several voices are now calling for governance based on food democracy, with more power in the hands of the populace. However, this call is often jeopardised by a dominant ochlophobia, the fear of the masses, in the public debate. This article explores the importance of overcoming ochlophobia in food system governance and advocates for addressing wealth power as a crucial step forward.
