Theoretical Foundations of Cosmic Inflation: Models, Mechanisms, and Challenges in the Early Universe

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The theory of cosmic inflation, a brief epoch of rapid exponential expansion in the early universe, has emerged as a cornerstone of modern theoretical cosmology. Initially proposed to address the classical shortcomings of the Big Bang model—namely the horizon, flatness, and monopole problems—inflation also provides a mechanism for generating the primordial perturbations that seeded cosmic structure. In this review, we explore the theoretical underpinnings of inflation, examining the key models, their predictions, and the mathematical structure that supports them. We emphasize derivations and analytic clarity while also discussing how observational data from missions like Planck constrain inflationary physics. Finally, we address deeper challenges such as the trans-Planckian problem, eternal inflation, and embedding inflation in ultraviolet-complete frameworks like string theory.
