1.39 Verse for the Earth: Exploring Environmental Consciousness Through Aesthetic Choices in Contemporary Eco-Poetry

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to explore the intersection of art and ecology, focusing on how aesthetic choices in eco-poetry contribute to shaping environmental consciousness in the context of pressing environmental challenges. The research adopts a normative empirical framework to analyze the role of aesthetic elements, particularly vivid nature imagery and eco-centric metaphors, in fostering environmental awareness within the literary domain. A qualitative, descriptive analytical approach is employed to scrutinize a curated corpus of eco-poetic works published between 2015 and 2022. These works were selected for their thematic relevance and influence on environmental discourse. The analysis highlights that contemporary eco-poetry transcends mere artistic expression by fostering environmental consciousness. This is achieved through its innovative use of nature imagery and eco-centric metaphors, which enrich aesthetic appreciation while advocating ecological awareness. The findings challenge traditional metaphors in eco-poetry and expand the understanding of how the genre engages with environmental issues. The study offers theoretical implications by refining existing analytical frameworks in literary criticism and practical implications by guiding poets and practitioners in crafting eco-poetry that effectively conveys ecological narratives. This research fills a gap in literary criticism by integrating aesthetic considerations with environmental advocacy. It advances both literary and ecological discourse, emphasizing the interconnectedness of art and environmental consciousness, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of eco-poetry as a medium for ecological engagement.
