Spectroscopic and Chromatographic Characterization of In House Purified Exopolysaccharides from Coelomoron pussilum AICB1012
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A comprehensive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic and chromatographic characterization of in house purified exopolysaccharides (EPS) was assessed. The powerful FTIR and Raman spectroscopies were used to reveal several particularities of the collected EPS and to assess their monitoring in a relevant storage timeline. Firstly, Coelomoron pussilum AICB1012 species were exposed to 5 different ratios of C:N concentrations during cultivation conditions within an elementary experimental setup. Then, the spectral features and the specific retention times for the monosaccharide residues were monitored by using dynamic SERS measurements and HPLC analysis. Specific Raman and IR bands and their relative intensities revealed the presence of different exopolysaccharide species; therefore, the spectroscopic methodology is suitable for real time monitoring and improving the essential componence of the recycled biomass or other byproducts. This straightforward approach allowed the characterization and monitoring of EPS produced by cyanobacteria, with a promising industrial potential. Thus, even for an under-studied species, the principles of circular economy can be implemented from the outset of industrial exploitation.
