Age-related changes in osteoarthritic chondrocytes

Year: 2009
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Age is the most important risk factor in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Numerous studies have now demonstrated that age-related changes occur in both the extracellular matrix and chondrocytes of OA cartilage and such changes are proposed to alter the tissue's biomechanical properties, thus predisposing to OA onset. The study presented here describes further investigation of two such age-related changes, cellular senescence and oxidative stress.
