Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To determinee if depression and distress related to diabetes are \nrisk factors of poor metabolic control in adults with diabetes mellitus type 2. \n MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-control study in the Albrecht Hospital \nI of ESSALUD Trujillo, 322 adults with diabetes mellitus 2, which were studied \n55/63 were cases with depression/distress. \nRESULTS: The prevalence of depression was 17% (55/322) and distress related \nto the diabetes mellitus 19.56% (63/322). Depression increases the risk of poor \nmetabolic control but not significantly (56.4% vs. 56.2%) OR=1.008 (IC 0.561- \n1.809) p=0.551. Distress related to diabetes significantly increases the risk of poor \nmetabolic control (61.9% vs. 54.8%) OR=1.339 (IC 0.762-2.354) p=0.191. The \ndegree of depression does not influence on the presence of poor control metabolic \nmild depression p=0.265; moderate p=0.149. Dimension that influence \nsignificantly in the distress ratio-bad metabolic control are the emotional \n(p=0.042). \nCONCLUSIONS: Diabetes related distress is risk factor for bad metabolic \ncontrol; depression increases the risk of poor metabolic control but not \nsignificantly.
