Abstract: This paper examines the effect of college educational loan debt on homeownership. I hypothesize that student loans adversely affect home purchases and theorize that younger individuals with student loans have a stronger negative relationship with homeownership. I employ the most current data for student loan, wages, age, and homeownership status from the Survey of Consumer Finances to analyze this relationship. Using a Logistic regression model, I find that student loans have a negative and statistically significant effect on homeownership. The negative effect of student loans is less concentrated when including age as a determinant of homeownership. As student loans increase, the probability of owning a home decreases but as age increases the probability of homeownership also rises. I also find that for young individuals with student loan debt, student loans do not have a statistically significant effect on homeownership.
