El síndrome de fatiga crónica y la psicologización de la incertidumbre
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The present article examines the various medical frameworks that have been used to address chronic fatigue syndrome, a debilitating condition that remains largely unfamiliar to many healthcare professionals and is surrounded by a degree of medical uncertainty. Beginning with a critique of the dichotomous classification of diseases as either organic or functional, the article explores the complex relationship between medical uncertainty and psychogenic hypotheses of somatic symptoms (psychologization). From this same perspective, it reviews the concept of medically unexplained symptoms, the now-defunct DSM category of somatoform disorders, and the concept of central sensitivity syndromes. Through a series of case studies, the article discusses the rationale and implications of the psychologization of symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome and offers some recommendations for healthcare professionals.
