Exploring factors influencing progression from taught study to postgraduate research at the OU
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: In parts of the higher education sector, there is often an established pathway for the progression of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students to postgraduate research within the same institution. However, the proportion of OU PhD students who have previously completed a taught qualification with the University is generally perceived to be low. The focus of this project was to investigate the current progression of OU STEM students from taught courses to postgraduate research within the University and the reasons for pursuing or not pursuing this pathway. A mixed methods approach was used which included evaluating institutional data and a student survey. Initial findings indicate that part-time PhD students are more likely than full-time students to have previously completed taught courses at the University. The proportion of PhD students who hold taught qualifications with the OU also varies between Schools in the STEM faculty. Key barriers to progression identified include cost, time constraints, location, confidence, limited opportunities, absence of support and lack of practical experience. These findings, along with further analysis, may help to inform potential improvements to widen access to postgraduate research for OU graduates.
