Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe how the stay in neonatology service of a premature child could influence the establishment of the mother-child bond during the first days of life. Data collection was conducted on a voluntary basis through individual interviews, using a semi-directive interview guide. The sample was composed of women (n = 10) who gave birth prematurely and whose baby was hospitalized in the neonatology service of the Hospital Center Annecy Genevois. The study’s results showed that the feelings felt towards their baby were both negative and positive. Women who gave birth prematurely could experience feelings of unreality, confusion and traumatic émotions such as anxiety and guilt. These feelings could prevent them from naturally investing in establishing a bond. However, this situation sometimes reinforces the mother-child relationship. Also, the social and medical surroundings have been described as reassuring but also intrusive, at a time when the woman needs to isolate herself to embrace her mother feeling. In conclusion, the data of our study are consistent with the literature when it comes to mothers’feelibgs and difficulties to establish an early bond with their baby in a context of prematurity, within a neonatology service.
