Abstract: Investigative reporters look into Coca-Cola's claims that they replace every drop of water they use.Is this possible?Synopsis This 20 minute documentary follows residents from the small town of Tumwater, Washington and their fight against the construction of a local Coca-Cola facility. The town already faces water scarcity, and now they are on the hook to supply 23% of their water to the new factory. In December 2022, Swire Coca-Cola (a bottling franchise) secured a 75-year lease at the nearby Port of Olympia Airport, convincing the port's commissioners to vote yes based, in part, on false claims of Swire's environmental efforts.Since 2007, Coca-Cola has positioned itself as a leader in environmental conservation by "replenishing every drop" of water they use.Over the last year, our team has interrogated that claim. We've found that Coke developed a novel system backed by dubious math to spin relatively cheap conservation projects as massive water-saving achievements. The company has built relationships with respected conservation groups and government agencies, like the U.S. Forest Service, which have signed on to validate Coke's replenishment claims. In recent years, Coke has presented their sustainability claims to local governments to secure approval for new bottling plants in water-stressed communities around the country.
