CHASING WHALES

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: CHASING WHALES, a short documentary film, follows a team of scientists on their journey to the Antarctic as they seek to understand climate change's effects on whale populations in what was thought to be one of the last pristine environments on Earth. This once-in-a-lifetime expedition has been 10 years in the making. The Antarctic ecosystem is at a tipping point. With so much ice melting due to climate change, ice-dependent species are changing their behaviors, endangering a delicate balance in the Antarctic environment. For the expedition, marine ecologist Ari Friedlaender has assembled a top team of scientists who will be using cutting-edge technology, deploying some of it, like an EKG heart monitor for whales, in Antarctica for the first time.In the icy waters of the Southern Ocean where daylight lasts nearly 20 hours, the team will travel along Antarctica's coastal fjords, searching for minke, humpback, and the seldom-seen arnoux's-beaked whales.Using crossbows and long, specialized poles they will attach satellite and video tags to the backs of whales, giving them, and us the audience, the chance to see and hear from the whales' POV as they feed, maneuver, and communicate with each other throughout their environment. This and other data they collect will bolster international, collaborative efforts to protect whales from the threats posed by climate change and human impact.CHASING WHALES takes you into the parallel worlds of the scientists and whales throughout the 10-day voyage.By giving our audience a window into the POV of the scientists, we will hear from them about what it's like to devote their lives to these animals -and to this place -in the face of trophic collapse.By allowing our audience to view the Antarctic world from the whale's perspective, hearing and seeing what they experience in this environment, we can get a revealing sense of what is at stake for the whales themselves.
