Window-Shopping for Affection: How Trait affection Relates to Tinder Users’ Self-Perceived Satisfaction

Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The present study examined if trait affection given, which is the type and amount of affection one person expresses to another person, related to Tinder, a dating application, by measuring the uses and gratifications and the feelings of satisfaction with the app’s usage. U.S. adults (N = 222) who used Tinder were given a 3-5 minute survey relying on Likert-type scales that asked about their level of affection given to others (e.g., “When I feel affection for someone, I usually express it”), their motivations for using Tinder (e.g., “To learn to flirt”), and their overall satisfaction with their app usage. The study utilized descriptive statistics and a correlational approach for variable examination. Results indicate a significant relationship does not exist between trait affection and Tinder use or Tinder satisfaction. However, there is a significant relationship between casual-sex-seeking users and their satisfaction levels (p = .011). Participants who aimed to use Tinder for casual sex purposes rather than those who sought relationship seeking purposes were more satisfied with Tinder. Practical implications are discussed. Given its widespread use, more research must be conducted to better understand Tinder in relation to affection.
