Abstract: Entanglement, i.e. non-local correlations between the constituents of a multipartite sys- tem, has fascinating and counterintuitive physical consequences, such as spooky action at a distance [1]. It is to some extent already under experimental control, and is a key resource for quantum information tasks. Up to now, however, there does not exist a com- plete quantitative and qualitative treatment of pure multipartite entangled states. In the present thesis, we study the action of certain symmetry operations, i.e. permutations, on multiple identical versions of a multipartite state. These permutations span the space of operators which commute with local operations, what justifies calling them ‘non-local operations’. We will derive a complete description of pure state bipartite entanglement, in an elegant fashion, in terms of permutations. To resolve the qualitative structure of entanglement, we need to discriminate inequivalent entanglement properties. This discrimination will be accomplished by use of a general no-go criterion, which we will formulate for con- version between multipartite states through local operations. The criterion is general, in the sense that it is independent of the number and dimensions of the subsystems of a multipartite system. Applying this criterion, we recover known classification results for small, multipartite systems, and identify new, inequivalent entanglement properties in larger systems.
