Abstract: In a natural environment, bacteria live in communities in close proximity.By exchanging DNA in a process called horizontal gene transfer (HGT), bacteria can obtain genetic diversity and speed up their adaptation.However, the fitness effects and barriers to gene transfer on a whole genome level are poorly understood.One prevalent process that mediates HGT in bacteria is transformation, and we will focus on this mechanism throughout the thesis.
