Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to explore if, and how, metacognitive therapy may be useful in the treatment of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). BDD is a severe psychiatric disorder. The person affected experiences a distressing and painful preoccupation with an imagined or slight physical defect in appearance, accompanied by safety seeking behaviour (e.g. avoidance and obsessive behaviour). Current treatment approaches comprise traditional cognitive and behavioural techniques, but there is a need to explore whether other approaches may improve current treatment practice. A systematic literature search was conducted to examine the existence of research on metacognition and metacognitive therapy (MCT) in relation to BDD. Results show that there is a very limited amount of research on this field. One study found that MCT had a positive effect in treatment of BDD. On the basis of this literature search and our own arguments that the features that characterize BDD are well suited for treatment with MCT, we conclude that MCT kan be a useful treatment for BDD. Further research is needed in order to confirm these findings.
