Modal frequency extraction of a bridge subjected to impulse excitation from parked vehicle

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: With the continuous advancement of transportation systems, the load conditions on bridges can no longer be evaluated using outdated standards. The structural health of existing bridges, designed according to these older standards, requires ongoing attention. Natural frequency of bridge is a critical dynamic parameter that reflects its structure condition. In Structure Health Monitor, many studies have been done on extracting the natural frequency of bridges from the responses of passing vehicles. However, factors such as road roughness and vehicle passing speed often affect the frequency spectrum of vehicle responses, making it challenging to observe distinct bridge frequency peaks. To address these problems, this study proposes using parked vehicles to extract the bridge frequencies under impact load excitation. Numerical simulations are employed to verify this idea. Influencing factors including sensor position and signal selection are analyzed. Additionally, laboratory experiments were conducted using a scaled two-axle vehicle and a bridge model to validate the proposed method and further investigate the effects of influencing factors. The results demonstrate that the fundamental frequency of the bridge can be successfully extracted with high accuracy using this method.
