Abstract: Social media is changing the way people interact with one another including how healthcare providers interact with their patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate how social media is or may be used in the provision of genetic services.Genetic counselors who are members of NSGC (n = 225) and genetics patients at University Hospitals (n = 103) were surveyed about current social media use, interest, and concerns in using social media for patient-provider interactions.A third of genetic counselors expressed interest in patient-provider interactions via social media, compared to half of patients.Maintaining patient's privacy and confidentiality was a major concern for both cohorts.Patients' privacy and confidentiality must be able to be maintained before more formal interactions can occur on social media. There may be more interest from both groups if an NSGC policy statement were in place to give guidance and boundaries for these types of interactions.
