Self-harm and social media use
Year: 2019
Type: preprint
Abstract: Self-harm has increased among adolescents during the two last decades, and established risk factors such as mentalt-health problems do not explain the substantial increase. Social media use has changed dramatically over the same timeperiod, and play an important part of adolescents lives. There is conflicting evidence regarding social media use and self-harming behavior. Studies find that time used on social media is one of several factors that may contribute to increased behavioral or mental-health problems such as self-harm. The aim of this study is to explore whether self-harm is associated with use of social media and if so, whether this association varies by age and gender and whether the association is confuonded by factors typically related to adolescent self-harm.
