Atrial fibrillation in athletes: pathophysiology and treatment

Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Cardiovascular benefits of exercise are indisputable.Nevertheless, there is growing evidence that atrial fibrillation (AF) is related to intense training. The mechanisms behind exercise-induced AF are not well understood, and the available data often appear contradictory.Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia among athletes, especially in middle-aged ones, often associated with endurance sports.Factors such as atrial ectopic beats, chronic systemic inflammation, autonomic system alterations, anatomical adaptations, myocardial ifibrosis and illicit drug use are thought to contribute to the higher incidence of AF in athletes, although definitive evidence is not yet available.Management of AF is particularly difficult because it can significantly affect athletic performance and reduce the quality of life of athletes. This review examines the epidemiology, possible pathophysiological mechanisms and management strategies of atrial fibrillation in athletes
