Cell-cell interaction in a synthetic co-culture: PHA production from sunlight and CO2 co-cultivating Synechococcus elongatus and Pseudomonas putida

Year: 2023
Type: dissertation
Abstract: In labs, microbes are often grown alone for simplicity. Yet, in nature, they thrive in complex communities. This thesis investigates a synthetic co-culture of Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 cscB feeding Pseudomonas putida derivatives with sucrose. The results present a highly controllable co-cultivation process that doubled the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) titer compared to previous studies. Further, the co-partners showed multi-level interactions, including transcriptional, proteomic, and metabolic changes, as well as highly increased cyanomaberium growth.
