Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Research suggests that there are both positive and negative outcomes of social networking sites (SNS) on psychological well-being (Lup, Trub, & Rosenthal, 2015). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Instagram use on users’ self-esteem, social comparison, and life satisfaction. There were 86 participants, 71 females and 15 males, all of whom were Instagram users. Participants were recruited online and from the IADT campus. Using an online survey, participants were questioned, using an adapted version of the Facebook Intensity Scale (Ellison, Steinfield, and Lampe, 2007) to fit Instagram, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), Gibbons and Buunk (1999) Social Comparison Orientation Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin, 1985). Two Independent Samples T-test, and a One-Way ANOVA was conducted. Results of the present study showed no significance between Instagram use on users’ self-esteem, social comparison, and life satisfaction. The strengths, limitations, and theoretical and practical implications of the current study were outlined, then suggestions for future research was discussed. This thesis adds to psychological literature as it investigated a popular SNS and its effects on users’ psychological wellbeing, which can educate SNS users and creators.
