Abstract: Premature birth can bring unexpected challenges for the parents, as the care of the infant happens in the NICU were the first bonding and attachment behavior take place. A premature birth might challenge the bonding process between the infant and the mother, demanding specialized care which focuses on the interactions and bonding between the parents and the newborn. The aim is to find information of what kind of nursing interventions should be implemented to support the bonding between the mother and the premature infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Literature review was applied to find information. Data search was done using three different databases: Medline, CINAHL and PubMed. All the articles relevant for the research question were analyzed, the chosen eleven studies were included after conducting a critical appraisal. The results shows that three main categories were found from the chosen articles, Challenges in the NICU, Nursing activities and Parental Support; the main categories were then divided into seven sub-categories. As a conclusion education and support from nurses have been found to play a crucial role for mothers to support their confidence in caring for the infant. Supporting mothers’ mental wellbeing as well as physical proximity has been shown to effect positively on the bonding process between the mother and the preterm infant. More insight could be used to research the effect of a preterm baby on the siblings and how to implement family nursing methods in the NICU.
