Effects of childhood stress: hardwired or reversible?

Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: The ability to adapt to a changing environment is of paramount importance both for the survival of the individual and for the success of species (McEwen, 2007).At the level of the individual, it is important to have a stress-response system that can protect against predators, changes in climatic conditions and food availability, and internal stressors such as infection or blood loss (Lightman, 2008).At a population level, it is the combination of individual survival and ability to reproduce that will determine evolutionary success.
