Power wheelchair virtual reality simulator
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In recent years, virtual reality (VR) technology has made significant strides, yet its application in special and inclusive education remains limited. This paper explores the critical aspects to consider when integrating VR into special education, specifically focusing on empowering children with disabilities through the simulation of power wheelchair control. The study investigates a user-centered approach, considering both child and caregiver perspectives. The research aims to determine factors influencing the acceptance of VR applications for children with disabilities and the relevant boundary conditions to alleviate caregiver burden. Employing a design science approach, the study develops a VR application comprising two levels, targeting beginners and advanced users. The wheelchair simulator utilizes a motion platform, a simple joystick, and VR goggles, providing an immersive and interactive learning environment. The research findings highlight positive outcomes, including good usability, observed flow, perceived pleasure, and the acquisition of joystick skills by the children. The study emphasizes the importance of a user-centered approach in VR application development for special education and showcases the potential for improving learning outcomes and motivation in children with disabilities. The implications extend to caregiver relief, indicating the promising role of VR technology in enhancing the effectiveness of therapeutic practices in special education.
