Transtorno De Déficit de Atención e Hiperactividad en el Adulto

Year: 2002
Type: article
Abstract: Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an heterogeneous pathology, characterized by an inappropriate level of attention for the age with or without impulsiveness that has become a problem of public health given it’s high prevalence (4.7%). Ifs impact on society is determined by economic terms; family stress, and interference with the vocational and academic activities of children, adolescents and adults. Alterations exist at neuropsychological, neuroendocrine, neuroanatomic and genetic levels and are related with the physiopathology of the illness. The adult's ADHD begins in the childhood and the presence of the symptoms before the age of 7 ¡s one of its diagnostic criteria. The high co-morbility with psychiatric dysfunctions (antisocial behaviors, substance abuse, mood disorders like major depression and anxiety) complicates the diagnosis and the effective treatment in the adult. The treatment of persons with ADHD is based on the combination of pharmacological therapy (stimulants and antidepressants) and behavioral therapy intervention.
