Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize the course of parturition in the female cat, to identify factors of variation and at last the impact on kitten survival and neonatal health. The study was carried out on 454 farrowings of cats of various breeds, comprising 2068 kittens. The mean duration of parturition was 182 ± 186 minutes (median = 130, minimum = 5 minutes, maximum = 23 hours) and the mean birth delay was 51 ± 86 minutes (median =30, minimum = 0, maximum = 1045 minutes). The cumulative birth duration was 116 ± 164 minutes (median = 75, minimum = 0, maximum = 1402 minutes). The duration of parturition was modified by litter size and the presence of stillbirths in the litter. The birth delay varies according to kitten status, birth rank and litter size. The risk of stillbirth for long births (>4h) was 2.5 times higher than for short births (10% vs. 4%). This risk was doubled in the case of a birth delay greater than 40 minutes (8% vs. 4%). Increased parturition time (>4h) was associated with a 1.5-fold higher rate of litters with at least one neonatal death (42% vs. 28%). Growth rate between D0-D21 and D2-D7 decreased with increasing duration of parturition. The growth rate between D0-D2 increased with birth delay, which did not seem consistent (22% for delays > 40 min vs. 20% when < 40 min). Better control of the parameters influencing the progress of parturition would therefore ultimately improve the health performance of kittens in French catteries.
