Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a type of cancer that affects the large intestine and rectum, excluding the anus. It represents the most common cancer in Spain, with 43,370 new cases in 2022. Globally, there were 1,931,590 new cases of CRC diagnosed in 2020, with a mortality rate of 935,173. The etiology of CRC involves environmental and genetic factors. We conducted a search in the PubMed database to find articles related to CRC and genetic mutations using next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. We selected seven relevant articles for the study in which the authors evaluate mutations in the KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and TP53 genes, as well as the presence or absence of microsatellite instability (MSI), to compare them with cases provided by Analiza Laboratories. In 104 anonymized cases provided by Analiza, we found mutations in the KRAS gene (58.33% of the cases), NRAS gene (12.5% of the cases), BRAF gene (10.53% of the cases), and microsatellite instability (5.26% of the cases). Simultaneous genetic mutations were rare in the cases studied. With this study, we aim to emphasize the importance of studying specific genes since, given their frequency, they allow us to individualize the treatment of patients with CRC.
