Abstract: This article discusses the position of the abbot in the governance models of abbeys under the Rule of Saint Benedict, and defends the point of view that (despite some major footnotes) the position of the abbot within abbeys is generally speaking less autoritarian than is often assumed. The article first discusses the role of the abbot under the Rule of Saint Benedict and in practice. It further discusses the internal and external control mechanisms to which the abbot is subject. Finally, it places some major footnotes under the main argument.
