Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Lamotrigine in Pediatric Patients

Year: 2021
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study evaluates the intra- and interindividual pharmacokinetic profile variability of lamotrigine in a group of epileptic patients aged 1-18 years. For this purpose, drug concentration data from therapeutic drug monitoring was used and thus, a population pharmacokinetic model was developed with the aim of achieving a better clinical outcome in the patients, increasing efficacy and minimizing adverse effects. This model allowed for the determination of pharmacokinetics parameters for different age groups and co-medication regimens, establishing a series of "a priori" dosage guidelines. However, result bring light to the fact that the use of generalized dosage patterns carries a risk of over -or- underdosage. It can therefore be concluded that it is paramount to monitor lamotrigine blood concentration within this age group.
