Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In “Olesya”, Aleksandr Kuprin, who deals with the trial of the Middle Ages with the sensitive perspective of literature, offers the reader the opportunity to analyze in detail the outward penetration of the inner world of a woman who is accused of witchcraft and rejected by society through her main character Olesya. Olesya's struggles, her rebellion against social norms and the folkloric elements associated with witchcraft are analyzed in depth in Kuprin's work. This study, on the other hand, focuses on the social criticism of Kuprin's work and the strong representation of the female figure, while offering a folkloric perspective on the witch hunts of the Medieval Ages and the struggle against witchcraft through the character of Olesya. The study also considers the social and cultural context of the period and discusses how the traumas experienced by women accused of witchcraft created a social reality. The work, which is analyzed on the light of ecofeminism in terms of nature and women dualism, takes readers on an in-depth journey into the medieval understanding of witchcraft by offering a perspective that questions social norms. Olesya's hardships and social rejection stand out as a representation of the traumas suffered by women accused of witchcraft. The aim of the study is to present this representation supported by interdisciplinary sources.
