Abstract: In recent years, the first examples of discrete quantum groups with Kazhdan's property (T) were discovered. The first goal of this PhD research project is to develop a systematic approach using geometric group theory to put these examples in a conceptual setting. This should in particular allow to construct the first examples having a single self-adjoint generator, and thus provide very interesting examples of trivalent categories. Using recent work of Vaughan Jones, this opens potential connections to the representation theory of Thompson's group.
