Abstract: Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, more students have started using AI tools in their studies. This research explores how students at the start of their programming education use AI and how teachers view it.AI can help with coding and explanations, but the worry is that students rely too much on Gen AI tools, instead of building critical thinking capacity and real problem-solving skills. To understand this better, I asked students about their experiences through a survey. And, to understand this in even more depth, I also did interviews with nine bachelor's students about their experiences using AI in coding.Teachers also shared their perspectives in semi structured interviews. The thesis project results show both the benefits and challenges of AI in programming education, aiming to find a balance where AI supports learning without replacing critical thinking and essential coding skills.
