Abstract: In recent decades, questions concerning national identity, immigration and social cohesion have taken place among us due to the rapidly accelerating globalization and increased immigration. The bachelor´s thesis aims to study the complex relationship between national pride and immigrant attitudes in a Swedish context, with a specific focus on how different types of nationalism such as ethnic and civic nationalism correlates with national pride and shape different attitudes towards immigrants. We found that a quantitative method was deemed most suitable for this study with the empirical data retrieved from “International Social Survey Programme” (ISSP) 2013. This data applies ordinal regression analysis to study how national pride correlates with negative and positive attitudes towards immigrants. The independent variables were two forms of nationalism: ethnic nationalism which is a nationalism based on ethnicity, heritage and historical context while the other form, civic nationalism emphasizes national citizen values, laws and loyalty to the nation and government. Our study finds that a high level of national pride is not necessarily related to negative and exclusionary attitudes of immigrants, rather it depends on the form of nationalism it is situated in. Individuals with a high level of ethnic nationalism combined with strong national pride tend to see immigration as a challenge for society. Especially in regards to crime, cultural threat and the government's ability to maintain working welfare while welcoming immigration. Individuals with a high level of civic nationalism and still a high level of national pride tends to correlate with more positive attitudes towards immigrants. Through Bauman, Ignafett and Brubaker we learn how both groups while having different forms of nationalism can create symbolic boundaries such as “we and them” thinking which excludes immigrants who fail to meet the cultural and behavioural expectations. This study aims to help future studies to further investigate this complex relationship between nationalism and immigration attitudes while approaching nationalism as a multifaceted fenomena without preconceived notions.
