Abstract: Historically, disability has been seen as an essentially medical phenomenon. In particular, an individual's disability has typically been viewed as a personal, medical problem that requires an individualized, medical solution. This viewpoint has been described as the medical model of disability ("medical model"), and it has long been the dominant paradigm for understanding disability in Western culture.
