Pain Precision: The interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain
Year: 2022
Type: preprint
Abstract: We aim to investigate whether the interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain is affected by subjective measures of pain. Therefore, we assess the interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain via the established Focused Analgesia Selection Test (FAST) (Treister et al. 2017). Different physical stimulation intensities (temperatures) will be applied to the non-dominant forearm via a contact thermode to induce phasic heat pain. The interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain will be assessed by deriving a reliability measure for pain intensity ratings based on repeated presentations of heat pain stimuli. In addition, we assess individual pain and tolerance thresholds as subjective measures of pain. To define an individual pain range, we will compute the difference between tolerance and pain threshold. We will investigate whether these subjective measures of pain perception [pain threshold, tolerance threshold, pain range] affect the interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain [reliability of pain intensity ratings] across or only at specific temperatures. In particular, we expect an effect of tolerance thresholds on the interoceptive accuracy of perceiving pain at the highest stimulation temperatures used in the FAST (Treister et al., 2017).
