On the Stability and Change of Global and Domain-Specific Self-Esteem

Year: 2021
Type: preprint
Abstract: Classical theoretical perspectives have implied that either global self-esteem is more temporarily stable than domain-specific self-esteem or domain-specific self-esteem is as stable as global self-esteem. The goal of the present research was to analyze the temporal stability of global and domain-specific self-esteem in a 4-wave longitudinal study across 6 years with preregistered hypotheses and data analyses. Here, we report supplemental analyzes to the data reported in Anonymous (2021a). We analyzed data from N = 1,417 participants with an average age of 47.0 years (SD = 12.4, Range 18 to 88) at intake. Analyses using latent variable approaches revealed that global self-esteem and the self-esteem domains were each relatively stable in terms of their rank order and mean levels. In fact, the sizes of the stability coefficients were comparable to those of other trait measures as reported in the literature. The present findings have important theoretical and practical implications for the stability and development of self-esteem in adulthood and advance the understanding of global and domain-specific self-esteem in personality theory.
