Abstract: As the volume, velocity, and variety of data continue to surge in the digital era, traditional storage infrastructures are struggling to keep pace with the agility, scalability, and cost-efficiency demands of modern enterprises. Software-Defined Storage (SDS) emerges as a transformative paradigm that decouples storage software from proprietary hardware, enabling flexible, programmable, and hardware-agnostic storage architectures. This article explores the foundational principles of SDS, detailing its core architecture—including control and data planes, policy-driven automation, and API-centric management. It highlights the key business and technical benefits such as reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), improved scalability, simplified management, and seamless integration with cloud-native and containerized environments.
