Abstract: This research proposes the valorization of sludge from the domestic wastewater treatment plant El Salitre in Bogota, Colombia, towards the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) through anaerobic fermentation, to be subsequently used as a carbon source in the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA¿s) usable in the military industry, which can be promoted in the implementation of biorefinery schemes. An experimental study was conducted with the operational parameters of temperature 45°C, pH 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 and organic loading 4 gVS/L and 6 gVS/L for Digested Sludge, 10 gVS/L and 14 gVS/L for Primary Sludge. The highest VFA production was 7392 mg COD/L using Primary Sludge at conditions of 14 gVS/L, pH 10.5 and on day six. © 2022, Associacao Iberica de Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informacao.
