National Honor and Religious Duty:Iran’s Strategic Evolution in Confronting Israel

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines Iran’s shift from proxy warfare to direct military engagement with Israel, arguing that recent actions reflect a broader strategic and cultural evolution rooted in national honor and religious duty. Triggered by the April 2024 Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate, Iran’s retaliatory missile campaigns mark a departure from reliance on Hezbollah and Hamas, signaling a new assertion of sovereignty and regional deterrence. Drawing on Richard Ned Lebow’s cultural theory of international relations, the article interprets Iran’s actions through the lens of honor, revenge, and identity. It also situates these developments within Shiite ideological narratives and regional geopolitics, highlighting how Iran’s military strategy intertwines with theological obligations and symbolic resistance. Ultimately, the piece contends that Iran’s posture is part of a calculated bid to reshape the balance of power in the Middle East and challenge Western-backed Israeli dominance.
