Queer inclusion or queer exclusion?: A study of the representations of sexualities in Norwegian EFL textbooks in relation to heteronormativity
Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to study the representations of sexualities in Norwegian EFL textbooks. Through studying the representation of sexualities, this study sets out to explore the potential quantitative and qualitative differences between queer sexuality representations and heterosexual representation. The reasoning behind analyzing the potential differences between the representations of sexualities is to see the potential heteronormative tendencies or discourses within Norwegian EFL textbooks, as well as explore the types and amounts of sexual representations existing within the textbooks. Based on the Norwegian national curriculum (LK20), topics such as identity, ways of living, diversity, and inclusion should be found in educational materials; these are topics in which queer representation could be\nincluded or focused on. This study seeks to understand how different textbooks include these topics and if queer representation is included in the discussions. Additionally, there is a focus on which textbooks and which of the included target grades contain the most queer representations and how this representation is portrayed, both textually and visually. Understanding the manners in which queer individuals or topics are represented in textbooks compared to heterosexual individuals or topics could support an understanding of teaching materials and create a more critical view of what they include. The results of this thesis could further improve educators' awareness and critical thinking, as well as shed light on the potential effects limited representations could have on pupils.
