Year: 2023
Type: article
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Introduction: In university life, changes in lifestyle occur; and sleep is one of the most frequently disturbed. Perhaps, due to social and academic demands, many university students adopt irregular sleeping patterns, which give rise to variation in this habit. Objective: To describe the prevalence of poor sleep quality in university students in the health area. Methods: A literature review of systematic searches was carried out in the Web of Science, SciELO, Dialnet, Scopus, Lilacs, Redalyc, DOAJ, Proquest, EBSCOhost, Springer, Elsevier, Clinicalkey, Mendeley, Google Scholar and PubMed. Studies published from 2002 to 2022 were identified, which reported on the prevalence of poor sleep quality in university students in the health area. For the search in Spanish, the descriptors “prevalencia”, “calidad de sueño” were used in the title section, and the descriptor “universitarios” throughout the document. In the exploration of publications in English, the descriptors “prevalence”, “sleep quality” and “college students” were used with the same formula and as Boolean operators “y”, “or” “and”. Forty articles were identified that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: In most research, the main causes of poor quality sleep are high academic demands and workload, stress, frequent consumption of alcoholic beverages, coffee, energy drinks, stimulant substances, cigarettes and sleeping medications. In addition, lifestyle, chronic physical illnesses, inadequate sleeping habits, and mental disorders are factors that also contributed to poor sleep quality. Conclusions: A prevalence between 25% and 91.80% of poor sleep quality was evident in the university population in the health area, according to the Pittsburg sleep quality index.
