Abstract: The aim of this thesis was to research which supply chain risks contribute to medicine shortages occurring in the Finnish market. In addition, the objective was to find out how medicine shortages could be mitigated or prevented through supply chain risk management practices. Medicine shortages have increased globally during the last decades which is why the issue needs to be researched and sustainable solutions to overcome the issue are needed. \n \nThe empirical part of the study was conducted as a qualitative multiple case study by interviewing representatives from pharmaceutical wholesale license holders and a wholesaler operating in Finland. The empirical findings mainly support previous research findings. The results indicate that the reasons behind medicine shortages are often complex and in most cases there are more than just one reason affecting behind a shortage. Thus, strong political commitment as well as national and multi-national efforts are needed to find solutions for the issue.
