Towards circular farming. Factors affecting farmers’ decision to adopt emission-reducing innovations in the EU
Year: 2023
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The agricultural sector is facing several challenges for achieve current EU environmental objectives. Greenhouse gas emissions reduction and ensuring a great share of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from renewable sources are one of the major policy goals. In this context, farmers are continuously looking to adopt innovative technologies that may ensure sustainable food production. Innovations adoption at the farm level based on a circular economy may improve resource efficiency. This study aims to identify factors affecting the adoption of several circular agronomy solutions, in four EU countries (Spain, Austria, Czech Republic, and Italy). Results showed acceptance of proposed innovations was highly related to environmental objectives, experience, university education, previous innovation adoptions, and ecocentric attitudes. Additionally, institutional support plays a relevant role in adoption decisions. Adoption factors may assist policy-makers in designing more specific and efficient measures that help farmers face social needs and current environmental challenges.
