Abstract: The lab of Patrik Verstreken has previously shown that in pathological conditions such as Alzheimer´s Disease (AD) the microtubule binding protein ´tau´ mislocalizes to the presynaptic compartment where it binds to synaptic vesicles. The binding of tau to synaptic vesicles affects their mobility and release and eventually leads to synaptic disfunction, which is an early event in AD. In this PhD project we will investigate different strategies to modulate the binding of tau to synaptic vesicles, both in vitro (iPSC) and in vivo (mouse model), aiming to interfere with tau-induced synaptic defects and hopefully rescue the pathological hallmarks of AD.
