Abstract: The analysis of gait patterns facilitates the assessment of physical performance across different ages, and serves as a predictor of the risk of falls and cognitive decline in older adults. Clinical gait evaluation is typically conducted in laboratories, but there exists a promising alternative through the use of Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), portable devices that enable the ambulatory recording of gait patterns.\nThis study evaluated two IMUs to select the one with better performance for gait pattern recording. Additionally, an algorithm for detecting gait events in the patterns recorded with the selected IMU was implemented in Matlab. Based on the detected events, 16 spatiotemporal variables were calculated. An exploratory experiment was conducted to compare the results obtained with the selected IMU and those from the commercial BTS-GWalk system, considered the gold standard for the test.\nIt was verified that the Bitalino RIoT IMU outperforms others for the intended purpose. It was demonstrated that the values of gait parameters obtained with this IMU and the BTS-GWalk system exhibit a high correlation.
